H*LD Self Storage required a high quality lighting solution that aligned with the performance standards achieved across previous developments, whilst also meeting the project’s compliance and sustainability requirements. A proven recessed luminaire had previously been used to achieve the required lux levels, lighting uniformity and BREEAM compliance.
However, ongoing projects are designed with exposed services to achieve an architectural finish, with lighting required to be mounted onto the underside of cable tray systems. This made the use of recessed luminaires impractical and required the performance of the existing solution to be adapted to suit the installation environment.
JR Revell became involved during the coordination and design review stage, working closely with the client, design team and Collingwood Lighting to identify a practical solution that would retain the performance of the original specification without introducing unnecessary risk.
The team reviewed the existing recessed luminaire in detail and confirmed that it already met all required technical and compliance standards. Several options were considered, including developing a completely bespoke surface mounted fitting or redesigning the scheme around an alternative product. Both approaches introduced additional procurement risk, increased lead times and uncertainty around long term maintenance and replacement.
A decision was made to retain the proven off the shelf Collingwood luminaire and instead develop a bespoke surface mounted conversion kit designed specifically around the existing fitting. This approach maintained the integrity of the original lighting design while avoiding the risks associated with introducing a completely bespoke product.
JR Revell coordinated the development of three physical prototypes to refine the design and ensure suitability across different installation environments. The final solution incorporated colour coded finishes aligned with the client’s branding, remote mounted control gear to simplify future maintenance access, and a flexible mounting arrangement capable of being installed across multiple surface types, including containment trays.
The solution was fully developed and validated through mock-up samples for client review and approval, allowing the project team to resolve technical and practical challenges early in the process. Close collaboration between JR Revell, the lighting manufacturer and the wider design team ensured that the final design remains practical to install, commercially viable and aligned with programme requirements ahead of installation.
The developed solution delivers a bespoke outcome without introducing bespoke risk. The client benefits from a compliant, high performance lighting design that protects both capital expenditure and long term operational efficiency, while maintaining consistency with previous schemes.
This project reflects JR Revell’s approach to practical problem solving and whole life value engineering. By combining commercial thinking with technical collaboration, the team delivered an engineered solution that reduced risk, protected programme certainty and achieves the required performance standards without compromise.
